Celebrating 140 Years of Varley
On 1 August 1886, George Henry Varley opened the doors of a small engineering workshop in Newcastle. One hundred and forty years later, the business he founded continues to thrive, built on the same determination, ingenuity and commitment to customers that have guided it from the beginning.
Reaching 140 years in operation is an achievement few organisations can claim. It represents generations of effort, skill and belief from the people who have contributed to the Varley story over more than a century.
What began as a business supporting Newcastle’s maritime industry has evolved significantly through the decades. Today, Varley comprises four divisions and 11 subsidiary businesses supporting customers across Defence, Vehicles, Services and Systems.
Throughout its history, Varley has adapted to meet the changing needs of its customers. This practical, solutions-focused approach has helped the business remain relevant while preserving the values established in 1886.
To mark the anniversary, Varley Group opened its Tomago and Carrington sites, bringing together colleagues, family and friends. The day provided an opportunity to connect, share memories and recognise the people, relationships and achievements that have shaped the organisation.
The milestone honours an extraordinary past while also looking to the future. Varley remains focused on supporting customers, strengthening Australian capability and creating new opportunities for the years ahead.
