CASE STUDIES
Flight Information Display System

Melbourne Airport needed a dynamic system for real-time information sharing across devices and data sources.

CASE STUDY - MELBOURNE AIRPORT

Flight Information Display System

The Brief: To provide flight information that would allow Melbourne Airport ICT team to manage displays and content across the whole airport precinct.

Melbourne Airport required a system which could connect to multiple data sources so information could be shared with staff, travellers, and visitors. The system was to be dynamic so information updates could be shared in real time and not require manual intervention. Traditional systems were not able to cope with content which required high-volume updates being processed every couple of seconds. Melbourne Airport also had a range of devices that were nearing end of life and moving out of support, therefore the system needed to be able to run on a range of devices to aid with the data and content display.

The Outcome

Utilising our software solutions team, Varley Systems’ The Frame Group developed a platform that connected to all the required data sources and to the range of current hardware that was in place. As Frame’s platform is scalable it has allowed Melbourne Airport to increase its use of flight information screens and due to the system being based on a “pay as you use” model they have also been able to take full control of the ongoing cost to run the system.

What We Did

Frame began the engagement with Melbourne Airport based on their need for a platform that could work in conjunction with an existing digital media manager system in anticipation of that system going end of life.

When that occurred Frame proposed and then rolled out new digital media players that would work alongside existing hardware while also allowing all required data streams to be available for content display.

Frame has continued to manage end-of-life hardware to support more than 800 instances of the flight information system. Part of that management has been the sourcing, testing, configuring and deployment of new media players to insure scalability, continuity of use and system up time.

Frame continues to support Melbourne Airport with the flight information system in the following ways:

  • System upgrades
  • Display template management
  • Relocation of instances or supply of new instances when terminal redevelopment occurs.
