This year, Ross Wells celebrates 40 years with Varley. It’s a milestone that speaks for itself. Four decades of dedication, craftsmanship and genuine connection to both Varley and the Newcastle community.
Ross’s story with Varley began almost by chance. Fresh out of his apprenticeship at BHP, he took on what was meant to be six weeks of work. That was 40 years ago.
A true tradesman, Ross spent many years as a boilermaker at the original Carrington site on Parker Street and later moved to the Tomago site. His work has taken him far beyond Newcastle, including significant projects in the Philippines and Kangaroo Valley. Over the years, Ross has specialised in a variety of work, including complex projects at power stations. Ross is a highly regarded tradesman within Varley and is respected for his skill, reliability and deep practical knowledge.
Today, Ross works in a field service role where no two days are the same, and that suits him just fine. A natural problem solver, he thrives on variety, changing environments and the satisfaction of getting the job done for customers across mine sites and beyond.
Outside of work, Ross is a proud family man. He and his son share a love of soccer. Ross was a talented player in his own right, and his son has gone on to play for the Newcastle Jets and now lines up for Broadmeadow Magic in first grade. Alongside sport, Ross enjoys time with his family and keeping on top of the ever-growing list of home projects.
Born and bred in Newcastle, Ross embodies everything that makes this community special: hardworking, grounded and generous in spirit.
As part of Varley’s long service recognition, Ross was given the opportunity to donate $5000 to a charity of his choice, and without hesitation he chose Starlight Children’s Foundation, an organisation dedicated to brightening the lives of seriously ill children. It’s a choice that tells you a lot about the man. Ross believes every child deserves a chance to feel joy, and this donation is his way of making that happen.
