NSW Rural Fire Service – Cat 1 Tanker

The RFS is the largest volunteer fire service in the world

RFS covers 1982 brigades with 70,829 volunteers and 1,240 permanent staff.

Varley currently builds the Cat 1 Single Cab Tankers on a production line basis for RFS at a rate of 1 per week.

The Cat 1 is based on the ever reliable Isuzu 4 X 4 cab chassis which provides exceptional on road and rough off road terrain operation.

  • Cab Chassis: Built on the reliable, robust Isuzu 4 X 4 Single cab chassis with fabricated galvanised steel tray frame for durability & long life.
  • Water Capacity: Galvanised steel water tank of 3000 litre capacity provides long service life with ample water capacity to support sustained fire fighting activities.
  • Pump: Equipped with the efficient GAAM MK300D diesel driven pump to provide high performance fire fighting capability. The GAAM pump supplies rear Storz outlets in addition to 2 rear mounted 19mm X 60M electric Hose Reels. Class A Foam is provided via a Quenchmaster around the pump proportioner.
  • Rural area Fire Protection: RFS Cat 1 Tankers are deployed throughout the state of New South Wales to best protect remote & rural areas of the state. The Cat 1 Tanker is well suited to operate in remote & rugged terrain areas, with the water capacity providing enhanced capability.
  • Mitigation & Threat Management: Suitable for undertaking mitigation & threat reduction operations, such as back burning. The twin hose reels are particularly effective in mitigation activities. Cat 1 also carries a range of tools effective in mitigation & clearing operations.
  • Versatility: While highly capable off road, the Cat 1 is also highly effective as an urban and regional appliance.
  • Safety is paramount: The RFS Cat 1 features a heavy duty galvanized steel Head Board for roll over protection. Safety is further enhanced with a cab crew spray protection system, fire curtains & blankets.
  • Storage: Features multiple on tray equipment & BA storage lockers supplemented by under tray storage for portable pumps, jerry cans, etc.
  • Bull Bar mounted Monitor: Remote high output water monitor controlled from within the cab for safety. Provides full 180 degree sweep plus 0 to 90 degrees vertically.

DFES – Medium Tanker

The DFES Medium Tanker stands as a versatile and adaptable firefighting platform, seamlessly transitioning between urban and bushfire environments.

Ventia – Medium Tanker

Ventia oversees Australia’s largest private firefighting services, boasting a dedicated workforce of 320 skilled firefighters.

  • Generous Water Capacity: With a substantial 3000-litre water tank capacity, the Ventia Medium Tanker is well-equipped to handle extended firefighting operations. CFA – Medium Tanker

CFA is one of Australia’s largest volunteer firefighting services, boasting a dedicated (volunteer) workforce of 35,000 skilled firefighters and operational support (non-operational) members.

The Country Fire Authority introduced this updated version of the highly reliable Medium Tanker, incorporating a number of additional operational and safety features.

New operational features include an electronically controlled front mounted monitor

To enhance grassfire attack whilst mobile, the use of an ultra-high pressure hose reel for mopping up and blacking out and electrically operated pneumatic valves to select water flows to and from the main pump. New safety features include drop down awning for the deck area, additional safety blankets with easier access and a rear view camera.

This chassis ensures optimal performance, manoeuvrability, and durability in diverse firefighting environments.
  • Generous Water Capacity: With a substantial 2350-litre water tank capacity, the CFA Medium Tanker is well-equipped to handle extended firefighting operations. The ample water supply enhances its effectiveness in combating fires, providing a valuable resource for sustained firefighting efforts.
  • Efficient Pumping Systems: The inclusion of a GAAM MK300D two stage pump, coupled with a Hatz -2L41C motor, signifies a high-performance pumping system at the heart of the Medium Tanker. This combination ensures efficient water delivery and pump operation, contributing to the overall effectiveness of firefighting operations. In addition, the tanker is equipped with a Comet TW 7036 piston pump, coupled with a twin cylinder air cooled 2CA1 diesel engine and 60M of 12mm hose for blacking out operations. Both pumps are supplied Class A foam via a Quenchmaster CF700CFA round-the-pump proportioner.

  • In-cabin Joystick Controlled Monitor: With a joystick (in-cabin) controlled monitor configuration at the front bumper, the CFA Medium Tanker optimizes firefighting capabilities. This specification allows for versatile water discharge and enhances the vehicle’s firefighting efficiency by providing targeted water delivery from multiple vantage points.
  • Dual Pumps: The CFA Medium Tanker is equipped with both a normal pressure pump and an Ultra-High pressure pump. In addition, the normal pressure pump can be controlled from the cabin, firefighting crew deck and from the rear pump panel accessible from the ground.
